Driver in jail after collision with pedestrian

One Olympia man is in jail and another is at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a car hit a pedestrian in an intersection on Fourth Avenue at Chestnut Street, Olympia Police reported Sunday.

Lester Joseph Doyle, 30, faces charges of vehicular assault after his Volkswagen Jetta struck a 21-year-old pedestrian in the intersection around 1:40 a.m. Sunday, said Olympia Police Sgt. Jim Partin. Doyle’s bail has not been set, according to Thurston County Corrections information.

The man who was hit was taken by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries, though his parents told police that they were optimistic about his recovery, Partin said.

The intersection on the one-way eastbound street does not have a traffic light or stop sign, but there are crosswalks for pedestrians, Partin said. Partin did not have information on whether the pedestrian was in the crosswalk when he was struck.
